Physical -
Since De'Vontae Morris has been in State ordered "care" his physical health has dramatically declined.
- He was able to sit up unassisted, he no longer can.
- His feet are beginning to twist from lack of movement. He suffers from excruciating pain from ANY movement of his legs or hips.
- His legs, hips, back, feet, angles and heels are experiencing fluid build up from lack of movement.
- He has bed sores as many as 6 so far from lack of movement. He has NEVER had bed sores before state "care". His skin is always dry. He does not receive enough water. His fingernails are caked with dirt and dead skin which could cause an infection anywhere he scratches which is everywhere above his waist, including open sites.
- He has hair and site discharge matted and mangled together so tight that his pubic hair is being pulled 100% of his day. Moving it or attempting to clean it causes excruciating pain and will eventually get infected. ALL of his surgery sites are covered in discharge with exception of his trach tube.
- 70% of the visits I have had with De'Vontae began with me discovering poop on him. 30% of those poops were old, dry and clearly had been on his skin for some time. I can't even change his diaper without causing him excruciating pain.
- He clearly does not receive any beneficial physical therapy. His muscles are beginning to atrophy. He is in bed 95% of every day. He is always in the same position. When he has therapy he usually just sits reclined in a chair (when I am there, maybe they are letting us have time together but…) At some point De'Vontae was outright denied physical therapy.
- His skin smells terrible usually. Sometimes he smells decent but usually very odorous in places he never has been before, between his toes, behind his ears.
- His legs shake violently from the pain of EVERYTHING he has to endure.
- They were not giving him pain meds because "He is smiling" when in fact he was in more pain. To compensate for the violation of his patient rights he was over drugged to the point of incoherence.
- De'Vontae has most certainly had seizures since being in state "care". How many have been reported or recorded?
Mental -
SInce De'Vontae has been in state ordered "care" his mental health has dramatically declined.
- De'Vontae spends hours alone and when someone is with him, it is not for long. Very little talking to De'Vontae (depending on the attendant). No conversation or interpersonal interaction.
- Because we said he likes cartoons, nothing else is ever on the only source of entertainment he has. At home he is presented with a wide variety of programs and forms of in-home entertainment such as playing with his niece and nephew who adore and miss and ask about him all the time.
- Because of the distance that De'Vontae has been moved we are unable to visit him as much as is necessary. After spending 31 years being intensely cared for, De'Vontae's mental health became critical due to feelings of abandonment and isolation. He became highly combative and emotionally distant.
- There is no way to be able to comprehend or calculate the extent of the amount of mental and emotional trauma De'Vontae has endured.
- With the state determining that he has the mental capacity of an 18 month old, is it customary for the state to hand out high school diplomas to 18 month old minds?
Emotional -
SInce De'Vontae has been in state ordered "care" his Emotional health has dramatically declined.
- De'Vontae has experienced the loss of his father, a multi-state relocation, and being stripped from his home and family in a very short amount of time. He has been cut off from family and friends and placed into a strange facility with strangers manhandling him at every turn. He is usually an extraordinarily happy person. Since he has been in state custody he has grown sad, cut off, depressed, combative, angry, aggressive, somber and melancholy.
- De'Vontae has lived an extremely privileged life compared to many if not most of his special needs peers. He has been afforded a very active and high quality of life. He has always been in special needs programs, constantly attended events, went hiking and camping, hanging with the fellas and talking to the ladies, engaged in community activism and environmentalism. Since those things have been stolen from him it is far more difficult to keep his spirits high.
- De'Vontae has a rich environment of love at home. He has a niece and nephew that love him and a community at large that is intent on his goings on. The emotional connection and benefit he gets from watching his niece and nephew play and interact is essential to De'Vontae's emotional well-being.
- Since the trachea was implanted De'Vontae is unable to make any sounds of communication. I imagine it must be pretty emotionally traumatic to live not being able to articulate verbal communication 98% of your life only to have your extremely limited form of communication invalidated and ignored and then eliminated all together.
Environmental -
SInce De'Vontae has been in state ordered "care" his Environmental health has dramatically declined.
- He is in a foreign environment with strangers.
- I keep finding dead moths on the floor which I leave to see how long they will be there. The first dead moth was on his floor from one visit to the next in the very same place. I am only able to visit on the weeks I get paid so the moth was there for at least 2 weeks which means the floor had not been cleaned since then.
- Until very recently he was repeatedly housed in the very last room of his unit. 2 times for several months each. Him being non-verbal and now mute due to his completely unnecessary trachea surgery means he should not be housed the exact furthest location from help or the door if needs be. This is particularly disturbing since the state thinks he has the mental capability of an 18 month old. Is this how the state thinks all 18 month olds should be treated?
- He was initially housed with roommates with a deadly infectious disease despite De'Vontae not being diagnosed with said disease.
- Despite other patients at his facility having live video monitoring of their loved ones we have been denied and racially discriminated against.
- As mentioned De'Vontae has no guard rails on his bed, which is particularly enraging because they say he has the mental capacity of am 18 month old. Again is it intelligent or safe to have a 150 pound so called toddler with cerebral palsy laying in bed alone for hours with no guard rail?
Monday June 5th 10:45 am - De'Vonate in poop - "will get him up after lunch, he has an appointment. Fingernails long with packed dirt in them - Bloody mucus - hair badly stuck to urine tube - bed sores from not being turned -
The court has brought testimony that De'Vontae has the mental capability of an 18 month old, but then what kind of sense does it make to leave an 18 month old with cerebral palsy for hours with no care, no affection, and also no hand rails for support?
How many other adults have an 18 month old mentality and a high school diploma? Is it common for adults to have an 18 month old mental capacity, or are high schools handing out participation trophies? Is it both?
Thank you for your consideration!
